FYI, Cdn gov't just released details on our anti-spam regulations, and they include opt-out requirements for sms: either reply with STOP, with Unsubscribe, or provide a link to unsub web page

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2012/2012-548.htm

Might be good to include something along these lines in Phase II requirements.

As far as I know, Clickatell will deal with STOP requests, etc.  It would probably be a good idea to pass those back to CiviCRM in some way - not sure if we do that.

Further to that post,

In terms of the best place to record this in CiviCRM:

I am wondering if we need a user opt out of SMS as well as a Do not SMS.

I have always imagined that somehow we could improve the whole interface for the CiviMail side of things, i.e. it is confusing that we have a do not mail and Bulk Email Opt out option (i haven't thought about it enough to come up with an answer!)

I wonder if this is necessary for SMS and if thinking (again) about the best way to do it for SMS might offer us some ideas that could be fed back into CIviMail.

Nope code currently doesn't do anything to handle it. May be list it under phase II.

"Do not SMS" + say "sms on hold" ? when we decide to do that.

Lets say what happens if this is not done -

- the provider takes control and doesn't send sms to users opted out.
- Sender still get charged for those messages.

IMO this could be phase 3, when the feature is getting used and there is enough requests and feedback. And when we do this we also add support for other short codes.
