How to change mail settings

I have configured mail settings under 'settings - outbound mail'. It works, but I want to see what settings I used. When I go back, none of the fields are displayed. If I change the mailer without saving, new fields are displayed, but when I select the former one, the fields are still not visible.

Which method are you using? SMTP? When you return to the page, is SMTP selected but no fields visible? Can you check for a JS error on that page?
