Postfix 2.2 requirement for CiviMail???
October 22, 2012, 10:00:20 am
Hi there,

I'm currently working my way through a test install of CiviCRM before engaging on the "for real" build.

I've ontained a VPS with all the PHP and MySQL goodies and have been getting my support techs to make the necessary alterations such as PHP memory limit.  The VPS is running WHM/cPanel.

My tech has responded back with ....

"I could see that the control panel integrated with the server is cPanel. Please note that cPanel/WHM will not support Postfix mail server. cPanel/WHM is only designed to work with Exim."

So ... should I properly assume that all the CiviCRM installs that use CiviMail are running on Plesk?  And do I really need to go there?

Or is there an alternative for running CiviMail with?

Andrew

You do not need Postfix for CiviMail. It says you do here http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/CiviMail+Requirements but that is incorrect. I can't edit that page, but anyhow, you don't need Postfix.

Have you tried to run CiviMail? Give it a try and if you have any problems, let us know.

Hi Hershel,

Thank you for your reply which is much appreciated.

So glad to see that it's just a goof in the manual.  I hadn't yet progressed to testing of the CiviMail until I had the base requirements worked out.

Thanks again.

Andrew

Hershel, Andrew,

That manual page is no longer part of the CiviCRM documentation (4.1, 4.2). It might be more profitable looking at The Books (referenced in the page header, above.)

To clarify, it's not a "goof" it's actually just outdated. Once upon a time, you did need Postfix, for a certain aspect of CiviMail at least.

The problem is that Google doesn't know about this. Not to mention that even if Google knew about, the wiki itself still has the page and one can find it via a search. Would be best if we could delete or edit that page.

My wiki user doesn't appear to have rights to do that.

Pretty sure that we turned off editing on older versions of the because edits there will not get merged with the newest version of the manual, and for the majority of cases, this is the desired approach. The downside is that that errors in older versions of the wiki will persist.

It would be somewhat mitigated if we could stop google searching older versions of the wiki.  That is on my todo list (not likely to happen before early 2013). if you want to see it happen earlier (and are willing to do the work!) just let me know :)

obviously the other thing we could do is give certain people permission to edit the older wiki spaces if they want to go through old spaces and correct errors - let me know if you want to that as well.

there are definitley some limitations of how we currently do versioning of the wiki. i think part of that is the tool set we use and part of it is that it is actually pretty hard to maintain a up to date versioned community edited bit of documentation.  we are getting better at it tho!

That makes sense to me. I edited http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/CiviMail+Requirements now to be accurate.
