Converting some Organizational Records into Household Records
October 25, 2012, 09:56:39 am
Hi,

We have a database where the vast majority of the Organizational records in the database are actually Household records. For example, we would have an organizational record for "Mr. & Mrs. John Doe" and this organizational record also has a membership as well as relationships. We need to now be able to convert out these records from the incorrect organizational record into a household record and make sure we can retain the appropriate relationships and memberships. Would an update import support this? What is the best way to handle this in the most efficient way possible? I'm thinking the cleanest way to do this would be to export all the records, remove them from the database, then reimport them as household records and then rebuild relationships and memeberships via update imports, etc with their new internal contact ids.

Any thoughts/advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

This sounds quite reasonable.

The maverick approach would be just to change the contact type in the database which actually might work if you don't have any custom data groups associated with Organizational Contacts. Truth is you could probably just delete those. I'm not sure offhand where else the Contact type actually has significant bearing in the database, but there may be. Perhaps someone else will respond.

But if you want, you could certainly give it a shot on a test site and see if anything goes really wrong. :)

Honestly, that was my first thought, but then it occurred to me that there are specific relationships that are set between org to indiv that would be broken once we change the contact type. We would have to re-build those relationships in some way....Not to mention the membership.

Right. In that case, doing the export/import would make sense. There's nothing "illegal" about doing that (whereas changing contact type in the DB is illegal :) ) and since anyway you must rebuild the relationships and memberships, it sounds like it's the best way.

Sounds like a pain in the ass, but figured I'd sound-board the community first. Thanks!
