Button label to leave a group should be "leave", not "delete".
October 26, 2012, 08:59:02 am
Hi,
I noticed that button labels to leave a group are typically labeled as "delete".
On a French version it was "supprimer" and "retirer". I don't know what the English equivalent of "retirer" would be, the one site where I look only has the "delete" button.

The problem:
The "delete" refers to deleting the GroupContact record (or "group membership"). However, a normal user does not think in terms of "group membership". If not further specified, "delete" is easily interpreted as deleting the group itself, scaring the user to click it.

Better labels:
"delete" -> "leave", or "leave group"
"retire" -> "retire membership" or similar.

Where?
If you visit a user account, and click "groups", then in the list of memberships you see the "delete" button.

Btw,
it could be that I was more confused than others, because I was browsing a French CiviCRM, and my French is not as good.
Still, I imagine that normal users can be confused by this, and then not even complain, because they think it's their fault that they don't get it.

Agree that 'delete' in particular can be confusing. Not sure 'retire' or 'leave' are better (it's hard to come up with a single word to explain these actions :-( ). For now, I've added 'title' attributes to both links to give explanations on mouse-over (in 4.3):

Remove => Remove contact from this group (status in this group will be changed to 'Removed').
Delete => Remove contact from this group AND delete their group status record.

Hi,
I don't think this is the type of issue I would typically work on. I am already happy I found the time to report in this forum :)

I think one-word explanations are generally nice. But if that doesn't work out, either use more words, or put a tooltip (as you did, apparently). Might be not the optimal solution, but a step in the right direction :)
