How can I have roles unique to an event type?

Do you mean that only certain roles can register for that event type or that whoever registers gets a certain role?

Either way, I think you will need to custom code that.

The first, roles that are unique for an event. Also have only a subset of roles that are possible/displayed for someone to pick from. No use having a 'speaker' as a role for a 'dinner' where there are no speakers.

You could code that in a hook in a module.
