If anyone is interested in having a play around I have added an extended activity report to the Extended Reports extension which allows

1) you to select custom fields from more than one contact (target & source - I haven't added assignee at this stage.)
2) you to sort the custom fields
3) it uses the jquery drop down widget to add fields rather than the accordian

I have a bunch of things I'm still playing with on it - I want to set up some filtering - which is why the non-working custom columns are there.

Should be installable from Manage extensions
