Add content to system workflow emails

I'm looking for a way to have a hook add additional content to system workflow emails, i.e. event registration confirmations, etc.  Lobo mentioned to me that this should be possible using the new regions functionality in 4.2, but not sure how.  Do regions apply to workflow emails?  I don't see any regions defined in the default workflow email templates.
