My organization is trying to come up with a way to tie donations with the paper mailers we send out, and it needs to be searchable. I have created a custom field attached to donations that is of the alphanumeric checkbox type so I can add to it as more mailings are added. I was wondering if anyone else had solved this a different way, or thinks this is the best solution to our problem. Additionally if anyone has a good solution to tag donations as they come through contribution pages it would be awesome.

We do something similar with receipt numbers from Quickbooks (a searchable custom field). And so far we find it usable.

Do you mean adding this same code that are on the paper mailers? Perhaps you could tie them all together to a donation page. And when donation come in based on this paper mailers just add them to the donation page you have created. (Although if you have a gazillion codes for the paper mailers, this may not be the best idea, but if you had a few a year, it might work.)

I mean for online contributions that are part of different campaigns: is there a way to have civicrm auto-tag the donation with something other than the contribution page? We do email appeals once a month, which means creating a new page for every email is not optimal because archived donation pages are no longer searchable.
