No confirmation email sent for paid event. Confirmation only send when not paid

I believe this broke on 4.2.4. I've just upgraded to 4.2.6 to see if still not working. When an event is "paid", no confirmation is sent out. Changing to "not paid", confirmation sends. I've replicated this on the Joomla Demo site. Soccer Game not paid sends confirmation, changing to PayPal Standard (using sandbox), confirmation does not send. I do not see any errors. Not sure what logs or debugging to do.

Anyone else seeing this? My Executive Director relies on the email for registration information. I'm trying to calm him and preparing a daily participant report I can send him, but this is definitely broken.

We had the problem you're describing and our developer eventually fixed it, saying: On my install the issue was we were getting failures in the Smarty template engine as I think that the upgrade of the message templates failed from 4.0 -> 4.1. Reverting the messages (which were showing as custom messages) in configuration -> message templates -> System Messages fixes the problem.
