Assigning different member status rules to different membership types
November 07, 2012, 01:56:32 pm
I have found a couple of older threads on this forum where people have expressed a need to assign different member status rules to different membership types.  I'd like to resurrect this request, as I think there is a real need for it.  Many membership-based organizations offer a grace period to dues-paying members but also offer "trial period" or gift memberships for which they don't want to offer a grace period.

In some instances you might compensate by shortening the original duration of the membership type you don't want to have a grace period, but I'm currently working with one organization that offers a trial membership that's 3 months long and their normal grace period for paid memberships is 4 months so that kind of work-around isn't feasible.

Since this functionality isn't currently available in Civi, does anyone have suggestions for other work-arounds I could use?

I'm thinking that providing a user interface to create and assign sets of status rules for each membership type could get pretty complex and it might still not capture the "special rules" needed in a give organization. It might make more sense to introduce a hook for the getMembershipStatusByDate function so that integrators could add logic for special cases.
