Any chance of having an online store that can connect with the Civicrm database?

no. we hope to get community contributions that integrate with 3rd party modules. specifically drupal e-commerce, ubercart and zencart

building store functionality into civicrm should not be in our plans :)

We're currently working on Ubercart/Drupal integration with CiviCRM.
