Why Isn't Notification Email Sent

I have a custom profile in place that I am using with a contribution page expecting the notification email (configured in the profile advanced settings) to be sent when someone makes a contribution.  I have tested this with a test contribution form that does not use a payment processor and it worked as expected.  For the real contribution form that I am using for membership renewals or membership dues, the notification email from the profile is never sent even after the contribution is completed.  Also, the receipt (configured for the contribution page) is never emailed to the payee and never bcc to myself.  I am using PayPal Standard as the payment processor.  Is there a bug, workaround, or am I just totally missing something here?  ???

Make sure that the 'sender' of the email is from an address that is recognised on your server.
