Verp addresses suddenly appearing
November 14, 2012, 01:04:24 pm
Joomla 2.5.8/Civic 4.1
Two weeks ago CivMail was sending emails with return-path as simple domain from email, eg "name@domain.com"

Now its appearing with a bounce / verp address in the  like: b.150.7941.68a85aecfa3e951a@domain.com

I cant see anything in outbound send settings that says use VERP - is it on by default at random?

Anyone have an ideas be great as its triggerrign 18hr bans on the sending domains ip

Hey,

Unless you are using a catchall address, you probably haven't completed the configuration of your civimail. Read the chapter in our book, it should help you
http://book.civicrm.org/user/current/email/what-is-civimail/

Otherwise: yes, it's normal to have verp on civimail, so it can process bounces and it's default and that's been like that since the start.

Something might have changed on the mail server you use to send the civimails two weeks ago

This our 4th setup and has been working happily for 4 months and Civi was not sending VERP headers.....

Are you suggesting that Civi alwasy uses Verp and that mail servers/MTAs (eg Exim) strip them out?

or /usr/bin/sendmail or something somewhere in the chain does strip indeed. Did you ever manage to have bounce emails working?

Normally, it's only using the verp at the smtp level and you shouldn't see it at all, not even as return address

X+

P.S. What did change 2 months ago.

OK so finally getting somewhere with this!
Verp thing is a red herring. They are always there.

So here is my theory on what has happened.

  • Mailing list went out with a load of dead/bad email addresses in the first few items of the list - bad luck
  • Looks like the bounce email was sent to clients main office email
  • Their office email handler triggered spam protection/IP ban after ten bounced civimails with addresss like b.223287frte8.@domain.com
  • Subsequent test sends to self never made it as our server could not deliver to their mail server
  • Ban has remained
  • I mistakenly thought something was wrong with headers

Great. So i thought i would setup bounce email under Civi Email Settings to goto a different domain. Will this work ok?

Eg
From address 'info@clientdomain.com"

CiviMail Settings for bounce: 'civi@clientdomain.org'

I tested the execute of bounce to verify connections which is fine.

I then added a duff email t a group and tried to send it to force bounce into mail box.
No bounces appear.

Am I missing something?

[BOnus Q: I noticed that executing bounce handling seems to just clear out the inbox - is this correct behaviour?]

I think you need to setup the prefix too.
Please follow these instructions, we did try to make easy to follow something that isn't trivial to explain or do

Thanks.
Unfortunately there is not a single mention of 'prefix' on that link/documentation.

Waiting for bounces now.....

My fault, should have written Localpart instead of prefix

That's the sub-addressing parts. if return+xyz@example.org works, the  localpart is return+
