Large member association - can Civicrm handle it?

we run an international member organization with around 800k members and 30k new members a year.  We would like to run Civicrm and Drupal, but wonder if it can run everything efficiently?

Any ideas or experience with similar experiences?

A group in Japan had 4.5 million contacts, 20,000 staff and changed CiviCRM to work in Kanji.
