CRM Core - a new Drupal suite of modules under development
November 17, 2012, 09:15:24 am
I was mildly surprised to discover that there is an effort to create a CRM functionality in native Drupal.  Read more about it... http://drupal.org/project/crm_core
It is still at version 7.x-1.x-dev so you can tell it is still at a very early stage and it does not appear to be targeted at a specific sector (as far as I can see).  Also, it acknowledges that CiviCRM, along with Salsa and Salesforce, "are very good at what they do and it would require a great deal of effort to replicate their functionality" and that CRM Core "is not intended as a replacement for these systems", but I think it is worth being aware of it in case we get questions about it from existing or potential customers.

I think the best answer to give would be that CRM Core is providing generic CRM functionality within Drupal and is not designed to be targeted at charities and non-profits.  The other remark to make is that CiviCRM is mature and stable and that this is still at currently a very early stage in its development cycle.  The only other thing to remark, in case it is relevant, is that it is specific to Drupal only (and therefore would not be available with Joomla or Wordpress).

What comments does anyone have to make about this?

few thoughts and comments:

1. there is also redhen crm: http://drupal.org/project/redhen for D7 and also another initiative called Party: http://drupal.org/project/party

2. There was a panel discussion on some of the above at Drupal BADCamp held recently

http://vimeo.com/52675110

3. Civi is definitely very user focussed and attempts to meet most of the needs of most non-profits out of the box. The other CRM's are more of a toolkit that a developer integrator customizes for a client

4. Competition is always a good sign, it indicates a very healthy ecosystem. It also encourages and motivates the Civi community to step up their game and continue improving the product and the integration with Drupal

To note, that panel discussion featured none other than lobo himself. :)
