Link pre-existent contribution to new event participant

Hello! I am using 4.2 with Joomla 2.5..
Somehow, a participant registered to a paid event twice and wants to use the second contribution to pay for his friend's event registration. I can see 2 different contributions in civi, but he is only down once as event participant.
How can I achieve this?
Could not find any information in the documentation explaining this, sorry!

I don't think you can do this currently via the UI. A workaround is to have a staff person add the friend's event registration w/o recording another payment - and use the note field to reference the contribution that 'paid for' the registration.

Ok! Just needed to make sure I wasnt missing something.
