Parse error after running upgrade to 4.2 on Drupal 7 site

I've tried running the upgrade script to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2 and I get this error on my Drupal 7 site:

Fatal error: Only variables can be passed by reference in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/localo_drupal7/themes/garland/page.tpl.php on line 3

... and I'm running PHP 5.3.x.
