Phone number formatting

With ongoing discussions regarding VoIP integration, and the new SMS capabilities in 4.2, it may be good to consider strategies for phone number formatting.
  • How can we ensure that phone numbers are entered in a consistent way (e.g. ITU-T E.164), and that they are correct for each relevant region?
  • How can we ensure that telephone numbers are displayed in a standard way (e.g. ITU-T E.123) as well as being consistent for external APIs?
