Sending a test message for a bulk mailing creates a contact record
December 07, 2012, 06:14:09 am
I am seeing a very strange behaviour on a site using Wordpress 3.4.2 and CiviCRM 4.2.6, and hoping that someone might have some insight into what's happening here:

We have a bulk mailing set up that includes various tokens, including the checksum, to enable recipients to quickly view a pre-populated profile, and amend it if need be.

My colleague, who is the creator of the mailing, is sending various tests of the mailing (Step 4 of the mailing wizard) to ensure that the message is correct and that the tokens are correctly replaced. When she sends the test message to her own email address (which is also recorded in her CiviCRM contact record), instead of pulling the data from her contact record and sending the test message, CiviMail is creating a new contact record, and using that to populate the test message (with empty fields apart from the email address).

If she sends the test message to other addresses that are also included in the CiviCRM contact db, CiviMail looks to be using the correct data to replace the tokens, and is not creating additional records.
Additionally, if she sends the test message to a test group, and her own email address is included in that group, the message gets sent correctly to her email address, using the correct data from her CiviCRM contact record, and is not creating a new contact record.

If I, as a second user, go into this same mailing and send a test message to my colleague's email address, everything works as expected and no new contact record is created.

If I create a mailing and test it to my email address I cannot replicate the odd behaviour. It looks to be specific to this user or email address. Why is CiviMail seemingly unable to match the email address entered for the test message to the email address in the CiviCRM contact record? Why/how is a new contact record being created?

Any input very welcome.

Thanks
Graham
