CiviMail from address not working the way it is described
December 08, 2012, 05:07:23 pm
CiviCRM 4.1.5

On the page to set the CiviMail From Address, there is this statement:

By default, CiviCRM uses the primary email address of the logged in user as the FROM address when sending emails to contacts. However, you can use this page to define one or more general Email Addresses that can be selected as an alternative. EXAMPLE: "Client Services" <clientservices@example.org>

I understand this to mean that if there is no default From Address, it will use the primary email address of the logged in user, at least that's what it says. I find that when a user goes to compose a new mailing and there is no default from address, an address must be chosen from the drop-down or a new address created.

We have hundreds of users who will be sending CiviMail and do not want to have to pre-populate the drop-down list. We want it to default to the logged in user, just as it says.

I hope I have described this problem in enough detail to show that the system is not working the way it is documented. I am surprised there have been no replies.

i do not see the above text in the 4.2 demo server. Can you check there

we changed this behavior quite a few releases back. You will need to implement stuff via a hook to get it to default to the logged in user

We really want a free-form text field for the return address that is mandatory but does not have a default. We have dozens of users who send email and maintaining this list would be cumbersome.

This is a change in the way 1.9 worked

sorry. for 4.1 / 4.2 and 4.3 you'll need to do this via a hook

if this is important to your org, please consider contribtuting a patch that combines your needs with the current functionality exposed. I dont remember the details of who/why this was done
