Membership Types and Price Sets
December 09, 2012, 08:03:05 am
My non-profit offers different membership levels (student, retired, etc) as well as regional chapters.  A member can belong to more than one chapter.   They pay for membership annually, and a nominal fee for each chapter.   I think I should use Price Sets or Premiums?  Or, can I get 2 Price Sets (member type, chapter) on the same Contribution page?  Any assistance on how to configure this scenario appreciated.  Gratzie.

Follow-Up:  Thanks to all for the responses and helpful suggestions.  The CiviCRM Forum is an invlauable resource.  After considering the choices, I decided to go with the simpler Groups function to add regional/local chapter selection(s) to the main membership type.  This solution works for 95% of our members, and the remainder we will handle manually (users who want to belong to more than one Chapter (eg, Group).

I'd like to hear about this too. I'm in the same boat, but we have so many different membership options, I just added them all as separate membership types.

Set up membership types for 'Regular', 'Student', 'Retired' "national" memberships. Then another membership type for "Regional Membership". Then  create a "Membership" price set with two price fields, example below may not exactly match your scenario but should give you an idea of how you can do it:

Price Field 1: National Membership
Radio Button
Options:
[ ] Regular $100
[ ] Student $50
[ ] Retired $74
etc.

Price Field 2: Regional Membership
Checkbox
[ ] Add regional membership - $15

Configure an online contribution page and select your price set in the Membership tab.

David - When testing, your suggestion of a price set with 2 price fields worked great.  When I tried in the Live site, the following error was presented.

"Please correct the following errors in the form fields below:
You have selected multiple memberships for the same organization or entity. Please review your selections and choose only one membership per entity. Contact the site administrator if you need assistance."

My page is live at...http://ceha.org/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/contribute/transact&reset=1&id=3

Please point out what I need to change.  I would like a person to first select their membership level (eg, student, retired), AND their geographical area (north, south), which is an additional charge.  Help?!

Your 'regional' membership types need to be configured using a different "Membership Organization" from your national membership types. You can add another contact record of type Organization for each geographical region (e.g. CEHA North, CEHA South). Then edit the north and south membership types to change the "Membership Organization".

Oh, this is cool.... I just asked a differently version of this earlier (I think).

So will this allow us to create membership application renewal pages where we can record a signup/renewal that splits the membership between national, regional + anything else?
