I am a relatively new user to CiviCRM and our organization needs to provide Cumulative (or even annual) statements of contributions to our supporters. I have reviewed both the books and forum topics but cannot seem to find a solution to this. I would like to send a donation thank you letter reflecting a supporters most recent donation as well as his/her contribution year-to-date. Is this possible?

Hi, we've noted that there isn't a report or pdf letter that is compliant with United States IRS rules for donors who have given $250 or more to a 501C(3) in a year and who need documentation supporting it.
We're going to see if we can get that developed if someone hasn't done it already.

It would need to allow selection of a set of tax deductible contribution types/financial types, then total them for the year for a given person, then, if they are $250 or more, supply the amounts and dates to a pdf letter via tokens... the relevant U.S. IRS document is here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p526.pdf

Jamie tells me that we heart extensions. I'm sure that's how it will be done if and when we get it done.

In Germany, we needed that functionality as well, and we published an extension for that.

Although I am not totally aware of your special needs, this extension might help you as well.

Some features:

checking all contributions since start of the year (only financial types marked as tax deductible)
if there is only one contribution in the year, this one is referred
if there were several contributions, a lit of them can be printed
during the year, single contribution receipts can be issued, and won't be included a second time in the end-of-year-statements
the created receipts are staored with the contact
template can be edited via the UI - so you would be able to adapt it to your needs (since currently there is a lot of German tax wording in it...)

Maybe worth a try?

It can be installed via "Manage Extensions":
"(Spendenbescheinigungen (German donation receipts) (sfe.donationreceipts)"

Further support comes from our web site: sfe-ev.org (website in german, but we can communicate in english as well).

If you wish to gather a yearly aggregate contribution amount for contacts, I do not believe an extension is required. Existing searches and reports provide this functionality already in CiviCRM.

Both provide a 'threshold' feature (e.g. "above $250')

1. The Contribution Summary report can group by 1) contact and 2) year, providing an aggregate total $ for one or more financial types.
http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/report/instance/6?reset=1 It is capable of also exporting address and email information along with the aggregate number.

2. The Aggregate Search can provide similar functionality, http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/contact/search/custom?csid=2&reset=1 It is capable of placing the results in a smart group, but cannot export addresses. You can, however, place these in a group and export addresses separately.

Once you have the aggregate total and addresses, you can generate emails through CiviCRM, or letters and address labels via Microsoft Mail merge or other programs easily. If you would prefer to generate PDF from CiviCRM directly, insert the 2013 aggregate into a custom data field, and use this as a token in your PDF.

We also have the requirement to send out an annual receipt summary. I'm trying to decide whether to work from the CDN tax receipts module given that it is quite hard-codedly Canadian (i.e the receipt is pretty much written into the code) and what we need is mostly the table on contributions with dates & some details. I'm tempted to simply write a token for it as we don't need the same level of receipt tracking - has anyone looked much more at this.

As an aside - I thought Samuel wrote that token for core - but I can't find evidence of it

Our US Org. is ready to start recording contributions using Civi and our Joomla installation. Has there been any progress on tax receipts? We normally send out hard copy receipts listing all the donations for the previous year.

In 4.5 it is possible to send out summaries of annual $ take. However, unless you enable smarty for this purpose in civicrm.settings.php your formatting options are limited - see https://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-14367
