How Does Front End User Log In or Log Out

Hi, I understand how to create links to registration forms on the front end. I also know how to create a link to the 'my account dashboard' to the front end as well. My question is: How does a front end user log in or out?
I did not see a mechanism to accomplish this. It seems that login info in cookie. Thank you.

I believe it uses the Joomla! login/logout to determine the users email address, then matches it to a CiviCRM contact.
