Categorising Media Types and Regions
December 11, 2012, 12:59:32 pm
What with all the tags, groups, sub-types, tag set and so on it is easy to get confused. I'm a newbie here and I could do with a pointer in the right direction. If I take a group of contacts such as media contacts, I could segment them in a variety of ways e.g. national/local or tv/radio/newspaper. I am unsure of the best approach, but this is what I came up with:

  • Broadly define a group, such as media
  • Use tags to drill down to the specifics by type e.g. tv/radio/newspaper or by e.g. region national/Dublin/Cork/Galway
  • If I need to contact a specific group e.g. newspapers in Dublin I can use smart groups to define the group. I can then delete the smart group when it is no longer required, hence avoiding a massive list of predefined groups

No doubt there are probably a variety of ways of doing the same thing... but in general would this be a good approach or is there a better way?

It looks like CiviEngage would have been a great module to have, but unfortunately I'm using the Wordpress install, which does not have CiviEngage.

Hi Andy,

A lot of what CiviEngage does with regards to media types is simply to add some custom fields.

I also can't think of any downside to the approach you're taking with regard to categorization and smart groups.  The only thing I'd suggest considering is the ease with which you would want other users to be able to edit the list of categories.  If all users have permission to edit tags, then folks may well start creating their own tags for media segments - which might be desirable or undesirable!

If that feels like a bit much, it might be easier to define some of these using custom fields.  It's also a UI question - but I don't think there's anything terrible about your approach.

Also note that CiviEngage is a perfect fit for a Civi Extension. If CiviEngage seems useful to you. might be worth spending the time and energy to convert to an extension

will help you and folks following you in non-drupal footsteps a lot!
