2 Questions: Confirmation Emails and Tags
December 17, 2012, 08:50:19 am
I'm starting to create my first profiles with CiviCRM and I ran into two things that I need help with:

1) Is it possible to automatically add a user to a group without a confirmation email? Or does the confirmation email have to be sent no matter what? We use groups for our e-newsletters, and I would like the users to be able check which newsletters they want to receive without necessarily having to get 5 or 6 confirmation emails if they choose a number of newsletters.

2) Is there a way to automatically tag a user with one specific tag? I know there is the "tags" option, but rather than show the user all available tags, I just want to tag people who fill a certain form in with one particular tag. We are using this for a volunteer form, and I was hoping to tag the users with the "volunteer" tag automatically when they fill in the form.

2/ is certainly possible if you use the Webform CiviCRM module.

1/ I think the setting is site wide - so you either disable the confirmation email for all group sign ups, or have it for all. Don't think there is an option to pick and choose.

Thanks! I'm installing the webform CiviCRM module and will get that working.

Do you know where the site-wide setting is for email group signups? I'm happy to turn it off globally, I just am unable to find it.

I don't think anyone would receive multiple confirmations if he selects multiple groups. Try it and see.

I definitely get an email for each group I sign up for.

What's weirder is that the link in the confirmation email doesn't work -- it's just a bit of text that says "click here" with nothing to click.

it certainly was the case that each Group sign up would trigger its own Confirmation email - one reason we rarely used it - might have been sorted in later releases - hershel can you confirm?

Well I'd like to disable the confirmation emails altogether, but in the meantime, at least to have a working signup form even with confirmation emails, is there a reason that the links in the confirmation emails aren't links at all? All they are in a blue word that says Click here. The reply method also doesn't work to confirm the user, so at the moment it is a totally useless email.

Disabling the emails is not an option at this time.

You can modify the email sent via the UI here:

Lobo - maybe I am missing the point here. There is a setting whereby we can disable the confirmation emails that are sent when people sign up to a Newsletter Group.
I had trouble finding it just now but perhaps that is because it is in civicrm.settings.php and I was just looking in the UI.

I've found the place to edit the email, and it says this:

You have a pending subscription to the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia's {subscribe.group} mailing list. To confirm this subscription, reply to this email or click <a href="{subscribe.url}">here</a>.

And the default version is fine by me. The problem is that for {subscribe.url} it doesn't actually input a link into the email. It just inputs the text "here" in blue, without actually including a link. This makes it impossible for anyone to actually subscribe. Do you know how to fix this?

Re: 2 Questions: Confirmation Emails and Tags

I tried it with a profile, but right now I am using the civicrm webform module which allowed the webform module to utilize civicrm fields.
It worked the same with whether I used a profile or this module -- it sends me a separate email for each group that one signs up for.

Honestly, I could overlook the multiple confirmation emails if the links in them actually worked, but they don't actually send a working link, so people won't even be able to join the group without an admin manually editing them.

Edit:
I found a solution to the problem with the links in the email here:
http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=25187.0

So at least there's that...
