CloudFlare CDN for Drupal+CiviCRM site
December 17, 2012, 11:44:52 am
I'm considering using the CloudFlare https://www.cloudflare.com CDN (content delivery network) with my Drupal+CiviCRM site. I see two references to CloudFlare in these Civi forums:
  • "Mapping: OpenStreetMaps works Google does not" at http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,24566.msg103442.html#msg103442 mentions a CloudFlare optimization setting that interefered with the display of Google Maps, but not Open Street Maps.
  • "CiviCRM stopped working after enabling a cloud Acceleration service" http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,19909.msg83080.html#msg83080 talks about problems with file permissions.

CloudFlare works, I think, as an IP filter. I go to my domain registrar and point the DNS to CloudFlare, and then in my CloudFlare account I point DNS to my web server. So CloudFlare sits in the middle of all my traffic, serving cached content when appropriate (thus lowering my server activity and delivering web pages to viewers faster) and blocking requests from IPs that have been flagged as malicious (hopefully blocking spam on my web forms). According to the Wikipedia article, CloudFlare runs nginx https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CloudFlare.

I would be using the free plan, and maybe the "Pro" $20/month plan during really busy months https://www.cloudflare.com/plans. Scroll down on that page to see detailed description of features.

Do you have any experience using CloudFlare? Or something similar enough that it's relevant?
Do you foresee any problems using Civi and CloudFlare together?

We JUST hooked up Cloudflare because of a DDOS attack. Free doesn't support SSL, so we're Pro for now. So far works fine. We had some login trouble because a WP plugin wasn't updated and didn't play well with Cloudflare but our host took care of that.

One oddity, Civi dashboard doesn't display. It has a Cloudflare placeholder. If you drill down to the reports that would be on the dashboard they show fine. I'm checking into that presently.
