Sounds weird I know.. but I like to know if I can force a member who is renewing, to create a new membership instead of extending the existing end date. There are 2 reasons:

1 Custom data: each year we give some members some stuff - and its all different. I'd like to be able to record that each year against their membership

2 tracking membership numbers. as you can see from my post - http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,27168.0.html.. I need to be able to accurately count members from previous years. If there was a fixed start and finish date, its all easy...

I'm not sure if I can help because I do more on the developing side than the using side but here goes...

1) I wonder if you couldn't use civi Groups to differentiate the stuff giving rather than try to depend on forcing new memberships.

2) Can't you run a report of active memberships to get a report of numbers or maybe active + new?
