Track Replies setting

This seems to come up periodically but I am still confused.

If I send out a bulk mail with Track replies ticked and Forward replies not ticked, where are the replies supposed to go?

The line next to the Track replies box says "CiviMail specific address instead of the sender's address so they can be stored within CiviCRM".

What does that mean?

If I do not tick forwarding replies, I do not get any replies.

Thanks...

As far as I can tell, CiviCRM doesn't attempt to record the reply, just the timestamp when the reply happened. Which means, checking track replies without entering a forward replies address is a really bad idea and probably should not be allowed.
