White screen when registering for a paid event

I am troubleshooting an issue that only occurs when someone is trying to register for a paid event.  Same event works fine if I change it to unpaid.  But when its paid ( any payment processor, including the dummy one, as well as only "pay later") the browser displays a solid white page.

I have added debugging code to the files CRM/Event/StateMachine/Registration.php and CRM/Event/Controller/Registration.php, but it seems that code is never reached.   There is nothing in the CiviCRM log either.   

This is under Drupal 7 and CiviCRM 4.2.6.   Any ideas on where to look next?

- Can you check your apache logs for errors.
- Are you able to replicate this on our demos.

Seems http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=27213 has a similar problem...
