civiCRM installation seems to stop at first step. no error

I just installed drupal 5.7 and then civicrm 1.9 stable.
All the requirements were green on the installation page, and I get the "You're ready to install!" message but when i click on install, it simply freezes on the next page. I'm talking over 1 hour with this on my screen -

Building database schema and setup files...

and nothing else ever comes up.
I tried refreshing the page several times and I've been at it several hours.
can someone help?

2.0 is now the supported released. please try installing this release
