CiviMail not catching bounce backs

Recently we exported our mailing list to do a one time mailing in Constant Contact (for timing and technical reasons).

Constant Contact produced a report that showed that thousands of our email addresses were bounce backs. However, Civi was not marking them as such.

Any trouble shooting advice?
