I'm not sure what's up but I'm trying to install CiviCRM via the Joomla admin section and keep getting the "no zip support" error even with the ALT file. Any ideas?

DETAILS:
- Centos 5.8
- Apache 2.x
- MySQL 5.1.63
- PHP 5.3.19
- WebServer to PHP Interface cgi-fcgi
- Joomla! 2.5.8
- CiviCRM 4.2.7-joomla-alt

did you follow the installation instructions?
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC42/Joomla+Installation+Guide+for+CiviCRM+4.2

I'm guessing you either:
* tried uploading the installation package with the joomla installer (instead of using the install by directory option)
* or you uploaded to a directory but didn't unpack it

the install by directory should reference your unpacked civicrm folder (recommended location is your /tmp directory)
