Country / project categorization
January 15, 2013, 02:27:31 am
We have donations coming in from the whole planet.
So far we have categorized everything by adding a custom "country field" to Contacts and Contributions.
I works great and we can make nice country reports etc.

But in the future we need more detailed categories with several "donation projects" in many countries.
We need reports/charts for both projects and countries.
Any hint for doing this?

What about CiviCampaign?
We could create a Campaign record for every project. A costum field could relate the campaign to the Contact (Organization) in charge of the campaign.

You could certainly play with CiviCampaign, not sure if it will answer your requirements. Can you elaborate a little on what several projects in many countries means with an example? Can a project be in different countries? Or is it projects within countries?

Many countries have only 1 organization.
But as the project expands, several countries has established more internal groups/organizations. They cover the same country but can access different groups of donors within that country. One org. could handle private donors while another handles companies etc.
And... there is also a couple of international organizations that covers the whole world, dealing with major donors :-)
There are around 200 organizations.

So we need a more generic way of keeping track of these things...

Okay, so could you not use groups and subgroups to deal with the countries/projects?
So for example you have a group Netherlands, and subgroups for each project (when you create the group you set the parent group Netherlands)?
Or alternative, you use the country as a group or a tag and keep the project(s) as a custom set?

Wouldn't this require that we manage donors relation to groups manually?
We have hundreds of new donors every month so this is not easy.

What I imagined was to create a campaign for each organization and a contribution form for each campaign.
This will asure that all donors are related to the campaign + org. automatically...?

I understand your thinking, I am not too familiar with CiviCampaign myself :-)
