Case activities don't show up on contact activities or dashboard

Our use of CiviCase is  limited as activities that are filed on a case disappear from the list of activities visible when looking at a contact record, and case activities don't appear on the civicrm dashboard.

Our team is highly reliant on these features to co-ordinate activity in relation to contacts - we can't always check up on each other before calling a contact, so we check the CRM - if the history is missing it can result in embarrassment.

It occurs to me to ask -  is it some setting I have overlooked?

Last I remember file-on-case was supposed to make a copy of the activity and file the copy on the case, then append to the subject of the original to indicate it had already been filed. I think that change was made around 4.0. So it should still appear in the contact record activity tab. I'm not sure if there have been any changes since then.

I'm not sure about the default dashlet on the dashboard, but you could change the dashlet to some other dashlet that does include them, like a report.

Case activities that are added to a case directly, e.g. via manage case, do NOT appear on the contact record activity tab.
