No emails sent to sending domain
January 22, 2013, 03:03:48 pm
I am attempting to test CiviSMTP with our CiviCRM installation. I had no trouble getting the account set up to the point that the smtp test email ends up in my inbox. I attempted to send out a form letter to a small group of our staff. The email came from tech-help[at]botany.org but was not delivered to any of the @botany.org staff emails. I tried sending individual emails to staff members with botany.org addresses and none of them go through. I sent emails to five other domains with no problems. Any idea why the CiviSMTP system wouldn't send out emails to addresses with the same domain as we are sending from?

Hi,

Very likely it's your mail server that ignore the emails, but civismtp sends them fine.

It's quite common than some not so smart mail servers (exchange, I'm looking at you)  think they know better and ignore emails @yourdomain that are sent from another server.

Setting SPF will help anyway, but I don't think MS is honouring them.

looks like your domain for the service is improperly configured. your current domain is configured as botany.org however it looks like it's used for your org email through google.

You need to pick a subdomain you want to use for newsletters like

newsletter.botany.org
or
news.botany.org

Then you need to add appropriate MX records for you specific newsletter domain.

Please refer to setup instructions here:

http://civismtp.com/drupal/node/1

Once this is configured properly you should test your account settings on your settings page:

https://civismtp.com/drupal/civismtp/account

At the bottom of the page check the “Test Settings” option and hit Save.

If there are any issues with the CiviSMTP Settings you just entered you will get an error with details on which field is invalid. If you get an error correct that setting and retest.

Please note that it might take up to 72 hrs for the MX records to propagate.
