A new forum for *using* CiviCRM for WordPress
January 24, 2013, 10:47:38 am
Just a thought, but maybe it's time to create a forum for issues with using CiviCRM in WordPress. Unless I missed something, this forum under "Installing CiviCRM" is currently the only place to post WordPress usage issues.

Since most issues are cross CMS (and most CMS issues might involve profiles), we've opted to minimize the number of CMS specific boards

what type of wordpress specific  issues are you thinking of?

Also once brought this up http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,23848.msg100216.html#msg100216.  I have since started a CiviCRM-Wordpress specific forum on my site to try and address this  http://www.jmdezigns.com/support/civicrm-wordpress-integration/.

IMO, splitting the community into CMS specific sub-groups is not a good thing. Most of Civi should work the same across all the CMS'es and the goal is to make all of Civi behave in exactly the same manner

Well, all core features work the same, but Views integration is Drupal-only and Buddypress is WordPress only (there have been a few posts about that) and there are a few other features/issues that are CMS-specific. However, on the other hand, you have to be a bit of an expert to know when your issue is CMS-specific, so you may be right.

Creating independent forums for CiviCRM support I think, however, is definitely not positive for the community. :(

While I agree that starting a new forum for Wordpress is a bad idea I wonder if the wording of different headings in the forum might be a bit confusing. In particular I wonder about the difference between installing CiviCRM and working with/managing a Wordpress installation. I wonder if it might be useful to differentiate between the two? Installing CiviCRM could deal with the basic setup and working with/managing a Wordpress installation could deal with everything else (customisation, plugin conflicts etc)... I imagine the same could be said for Drupal and Joomla too? Just my tuppence worth!

Sorry to chime in on this and I hope that you don't think that I am hijacking the thread, I am currently developing some wordpress/civi sites and would welcome a space where I could find likeminded souls. I understand the concerns about splitting the community and would rather that everything was in one place, namely here.

However there are a few areas of the forum which currently make it look as though Wordpress is the poor cousin. Personally I think it would be great to attract some more wordpress developers and these forums should be their natural first port of call when considering suggesting Civi to their clients or when they face a problem which would be best solved by writing a plugin. Here are a couple of points which would put me off on a first visit as a Wordpress developer.

  • Currently there is a joomla extensions forum and a drupal modules forum but no worpdress plugins forum.
  • Wordpress has a multisite feature which is called a wordpress network but is usually referred to simply as wordpress multisite. It is therefore confusing when you look at the list of forums and see "Using multisite functionality" - it should really say Using multisite functionality - Drupal. A search of this board for wordpress turns up two posts neither of which would make me think that this is something which may happen soon.

I think Civi is the best crm solution available for wordpress. I want other wordpress developers to think that too so that they pitch in, either through MIH's or by seeing the benefit in contributing production ready plugins rather than hacking solutions for individual clients.

A search of the wordpress plugins directory shows up nothing for the term civicrm so I do admit that having a "Using wordpress plugins" forum might be a bit premature but it sends a message.

As a developer I would like to see a feature grid which goes like this:

Feature      CiviCore      Drupal      Wordpress      Joomla
Doing Basic Things      yes      yes      yes      yes
Doing Niche Stuff       module link      plugin link      extension link

If I was looking for a civi/wordpress feature I could see if one was already in existence - if the feature didn't yet exist but there was a drupal solution I could learn from that in order to implement a plugin.

I hope that none of the above comes over as moaning. I am quite happy to contribute to the above issues within my abilities and am keen to learn from the other far wiser, more knowledgable people who hang around these parts. I am just eager to attract a greater number of knowledgable Wordpress developers.

Regards,
Douglas.

Well it is a fairly new CMS to the CiviCRM world, so that I think is to be expected.

However your point #1 is very good and I think #2 is also valid.

Most of the features in the core should work the same no matter the CMS. Whatever is not as good on Wordpress than on Drupal or Joomla is likely to be temporary and waiting for some brave souls willing to tackle it (or chip in some cash to make it happen).

They are some extensions (eg webform) that links civicrm with a specific drupal module, so obviously it's specific to this CMS, as would an interface between civi and buddypress (that would be awesome btw).

Most of the custom code however should be developed using native civicrm extensions, and should work the same on wordpress, joomla and drupal.

1. We've been moving quite nicely away from CMS modules / plugins etc into CiviCRM extensions. This allows a lot greater sharing of civi specific stuff across all CMS'es. So a lot of that distinction will disappear over the next few releases

that said, there still will be quite a few useful drupal modules / wordpress plugins which link CMS functionality and CRM functionality. So when we see the appearance of a civi wp plugin or two, we should create a forum topic for it.

Finally, many joomla/wp folks think that Civi's integration with them is secondary and is a poor cousin / lost soul etc. However, this is so strongly dependent on the developer support we get from civi + CMS developers that help improve things. So getting more WP developers contributing stuff would be great and is a step in the right direction
