Linking Imported CiviContacts / CiviMember with Joomla User
January 26, 2013, 09:08:32 pm
I've configured CiviContacts and CiviMember data.  I also have successfully integrated new Joomla Registered users into CiviCRM.  Now that I need to import a couple thousand CiviCRM contacts with member data, I cannot determine how to import and integrate Joomla users to the imported Civi contact/member data.  Any feedback greatly appreciated.

When you say you've "integrated new joomla registered users into civicrm" -- I assume you used the synching tool in civicrm (administer > users and permissions > synchronize users to contacts)? that tool takes all your joomla users and creates linked civicrm contacts.

if so, you can now do an import and use the dedupe rules to match imported records with existing contacts. you'll just want to review the rules and/or create a new rule for your purposes (under the contacts menu). since the key piece of data you would have in common is the email address, you probably want to match on that alone. you just need to realize that if your data to be imported potentially has multiple contacts with the same email, then you may get some issues (multiple records may match and overwrite the same record). you may want to pull those records out and import them separately.

Thank you for responding.  I need to articulate.  I have about 150 users that registered via the Joomla user component.  I will be importing about 2000 CiviCRM Contacts and CiviMembers, and will be using the awesome dedupe features in the Import Contact options.  My problem is 2 fold:
1) most of the users I am importing do NOT have Joomla user accounts, and in order to use CiviContribute to pay their membership dues, the members need to have Joomla accounts, right?  If not, then how do they pay online without an user account after their contact/member data is already in CiviCRM?
2) Unrelated to the Import, I cannot figure out how to maintain the Joomla "Forgot Your Username" and Forgot Your Password", without also enabling the Joomla "Create an account" (user account), which I don't want, because I want all users to e CiviCRM Contacts/Members.
Any assistance appreciated.

1) two options: a) you do some custom work to create user accounts for those contacts, link them to the civi records, and then distribute credentials to the members. that's not trivial, but can be done. b) you allow people to join anonymously -- have them create their user accounts -- and rely on the deduping tools to connect the anonymous record with the existing record. that option will inevitably create duplicates, because people will be entering data through the form, and it may not match the existing data. but it will also link many records that do match. you'll just need to stay on top of deduping.

2) that's a joomla issue. sounds to me like it has to do with your template. native joomla doesn't disable password reminder links when you disable user registration.
