Cron / CLI - require valid user

So I've tried several wordpress users in the cron job setup and from the command line but it keeps saying "Jobs called from cli.php require valid user as parameter" "Died during initialization". As recommended the new user I created doesn't seem to want to synchronize using Administer...Users and Permissions...Synchronize Users to Contacts though this seems like a broader problem. I am using Wordpress 3.5.1 and CiviCRM 4.2.7 on dreamhost.com which uses PHP 5.3.13; MySQL 5.1.56; Debian 6.0.6; Apache 2.2.22-14. I haven't tried falling back to URLs yet because I want the CLI to work well for all the advantages it provides. Any suggestions?

Get the URL to work first--that's what I recommend.

Did you try using the main admin user? As a test.
