Manage volunteers - CB or JomSocial (ohh, and civiCRM)
February 06, 2013, 11:39:42 am
I am deciding between these nd still not sure which one to pick.

Basically I am looking for a solution to register volunteers and then also display a listing of availability and other details.

## The volunteers would fill out a form, listing details such as available days, number of hours available per month, city, etc. (In community builder you can ad extra fields for such questions, not sure about the other extensions)

## A listing of volunteers should be displayed for managers and have a filter so managers can filter out the listing, especially by the extra fields the users entered.
Need a flexible listing of volunteers with filtering options.

## ONE LAST THING.... Is civiCRM flexible? I mean if I would like to pull information from civiCRM and display it in a custom module, fairly doable?

I'm looking at JomSocial or CB to take care of our volunteer management, but also giving civiCRM a chance, or maybe it can integrate with one of the other two.  JomSocial and CB are more social network based which we will need a little bit of those features, but maybe civiCRM can tie into this?

- Needs to be informed    :)

Hi r083rt

Civi would be an excellent choice for volunteer management and we know quite a few organisations using it to manage their volunteers and volunteering opportunities in various ways. We've done a fairly big job to set up system where volunteers register as you describe and managers oversee the process when these volunteers apply for volunteering opportunities.

If you use Drupal, then you have great options for flexible filtering using views. Drupal also gives you great social media features.

There are also some bigger plans around managing volunteering in Civi see

Looking at jomsocial, I can't really see how you can do much of the stuff you'd need to. What is CB?

I should have mentioned.... I'm building my site on Joomla.  I chose Joomla because I'm not a programer or know any code.  This came across as the better choice for someone like me.

CB stands for Community Builder and it is basically another brand of social profiles and networking, like JomSocial.

From my other post on JomSocial, Sinisa details how to use JomSocial for the needs I described.  I'm sure it's not the best suited system but it does flex enough, I think.

I will be checking out civiCRM more tomorrow.  If anyone else has any advice please post.

I agree with Dave that CiviCRM is an excellent choice. But part of it depends on your future ideas. If it is limited to registering perhaps CB or JomSocial can do the job. Picking CIviCRM now however gives you probably the best growing options :-)
By the way, you can use Drupal too without being a prgrammer or knowing any code :-)
Good Luck!
