New memberships have no dates
February 12, 2013, 09:13:52 am
Hi, we've been trying to set up auto renew memberships for a while now and are having issues with the memberships sitting in the pending state. At first we thought it was an issue with PayPal and IPNs but it turns out those are working okay. It seems that when a new auto renew membership is created it doesn't have any dates (since, start, or end). Since there are no dates to figure out a status, it sits at pending and the whole auto renewal feature can't really come into effect.

Has anyone run into anything like this or know why it might be happening? Here is our original thread (when we thought it was a different problem) for reference.

Thanks!

I realize the subject may not be proper English, but does anyone have any thoughts regardless?  ;D

I think the subject is actually proper English. :)

Regarding your problem, can you try to recreate this on the demo?

do you have your Scheduled Jobs set up (can't recall if this would affect payment status or not)

hmm - don't think they do - but here is link anyhow - http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/job?reset=1

if this is with recurring payments then I doubt you can replicate on demo

hmmm - maybe i should read slower - if this is about Membership Status then maybe the Scheduled Job is involved

I think that the memberships do not have start and end dates BECAUSE their status is still pending. AND my recollection is that the test-drive recurring contributions NEVER get completed (at least for some processors). Can you try signing up for an auto-renew membership as a live transaction and see what happens?

Well maybe it is correct... it sure sounds funny!

Hershel: I had not been able to recreate on the demo site before, but I might try again since last time I did I didn't know as much.

petednz: The Scheduled Job for Membership status processor is not currently scheduled, though I have run it thinking that it might affect this but it did not. I'm not sure if membership status is the culprit, it just seems involved. The main issue is that auto-renew payments (for memberships in this case) just sit at pending, even though PayPal processes it fine (i.e. charges the first payment and creates a recurring payment profile).

Dave: That would make sense; I was thinking the reverse maybe. I did try signing up for a few auto-renew memberships live (for $1) and the same thing happened. Card was charged, profile set up and membership pending.

I have taken a few weeks off from this since we decided it was okay to do it more manually for a little while, but it's still something that isn't working and we would like fixed of course. I appreciate the responses, I will hopefully have some more time to dig back in tomorrow/this weekend.

have we confirmed yet that it is the Contribution that is pending (on the Contribution Tab) - and hence the membership is left unfulfilled?

Yes the contribution is still pending - "Pending (Incomplete Transaction)" and the membership was pending until I went in and edited it. I didn't change anything about the membership at all, I just clicked edit and then save, but by editing it the member since date was automatically filled in and then the membership was "New" after saving.

But that's a good point, like Dave said too, I guess maybe the Contribution is what is holding all this up. Originially I thought it was a PayPal IPN issue and maybe that's still part of it with Civi dealing with the recurring contribution.
