Can I delete Hidden Smart Groups? How?

I am using search builder to create mailings. I've had a lot of trouble in the past and I have created hidden smart groups numbered 1-25 (listed in the groups database).

Recently I went to do another mailing in the same way and for some reason it was trying to create new hidden smart groups with number 5-8 which was generated a fatal error - DB already exists. I can work around this by naming the smart group and then using it that way, but can I delete the Hidden smart groups.

There doesn't seem to be any way to delete them within civirm so I am looking at phpmyadmin

The information in the groups DB seems to point to the groups_contact_cache which has been cleared and has no data, so I would assume that the data is in various mailing files. Can I safely delete the entries for the hidden groups and free up those numbers. If not, any suggestions.

1. would be good if you can check and trace the issue as to why it is generating a smart group with an older id. might be a larger underlying problem

2. You can delete the hidden groups (might have some effect on older mailing reports). There is also a related entry in civicrm_saved_search with regard to a smart group, but most likely that has a mysql "on delete cascade" clause
