Trying to Evaluate CiviCRM - does it integrate with accounting software?
February 18, 2013, 07:40:03 am
Hello,

We are looking for a new membership database, which we will want to integrate with our new website (CRM platform is Kentico). However, we need the membership database to work with our Sage accounting products. Does CiviCRM already do this?

Thank you!

Hi. Kentico runs on ASP and CiviCRM needs to run inside of a PHP-based CRM (Drupal, WordPress or Joomla) which means that these two systems, i.e. Kentic in ASP and CiviCRM in PHP, are inherently separate. You can however achieve some level of integration using the API.

Integration with Sage is doable as far as payment processing, but beyond that, while there have been discussions of building more advanced integration, I don't believe any such tool exists.

I am not aware of an actual existing integration or link with Sage, but I do know that there is a CiviCRM API which is quite powerful. For more information check http://book.civicrm.org/developer/current/techniques/api/

I have used the API in projects to synchronize CiviCRM with an Oracle/Java application and with a email listing website.

Beyond the API, the upcoming 4.3 release of CiviCRM includes the ability to create Accounting Batches and export the data in .CSV or .IIF (QuickBooks) format. Assuming Sage can import either of these formats AND the exported data is sufficient for your needs - this may be a workable approach.

This functionality is new (4.3 is in alpha now) - so folks are just beginning to exercise it for integration w/ various packages. Formal doc is in the works but you can see 'specifications' for the exports here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/CiviAccounts+Specifications+-++Batches#CiviAccountsSpecifications-Batches-ExportingaBatch

Would be great if you could try it out on the Alpha sandbox and explore how it can work w/ Sage.
