Mailings: can From Email Address default to logged in user?

I am familiar with the admin way to add additional from addresses, but I would rather have Civi default to the from address of the logged in user when sending a mailing. This is how it works for sending messages to smaller groups of contacts. Otherwise, I have to enter all staff emails in that drop down and there is no security to prevent someone accidentally sending a bulk email from the wrong address.

I found this issue raised here also:
http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=27087.0

and the answer was to "write a hook" for this. Has anyone done that or something similar?
