Thank-you letter for contributions inputting {contribution.type}

I am just a newbee to civiCRM and have a problem with placing certaing {} into my letters.

Dear {contact.first_name},
Thank you for your recent {contribution.type} of {contribution.total_amount} on the {contribution.receive_date} and assisting us with our life protecting projects by giving generously.

produces this:

Dear Michelle,
Thank you for your recent of $ 1.00 on the February 20th, 2013 and assisting us with our life protecting projects by
giving generously.

As you can see {contribution.type} is not showing up - i.e. Donation

Am i using the wrong tag perhaps? - How do i find this infoamtion out - what to use?

I dont understand why amount and date were so easy to implement but type is not. This is the information i followed to implement http://book.civicrm.org/user/current/contributions/everyday-tasks/

Does anyone know how to get the contribution type into the letter? ANy help would be greatly appreciated ???

FYI: If i go the the actual contribution and view it i see these fields:

From: Michelle S******
Contribution Type: Donation
Total Amount: $1.00
Received: February 20th, 2013 5:33 PM

hey - not sure if this will help but when i was trying to customise an Event Email to have a 'if event type id is x' - and couldn't figure if i needed toke to be event_type or eventtype or EventTypeName ..... or event_type_id ??
dgg said on irc: if you can run in a test environment, best thing is to add {debug} into message template and check the variables - they'll be dumped out.

so then when you get the email, look at Raw Source of the msg and you may find the token you need - hth

My requirement is to print the current date. ie the date thankyou letters are being sent. I tried token thankyoudatetoken also but it does not work. need a token which will print current date. Tried smarty variable also but it does work. i think civi does not use smarty while printing pdf letter.
