Base URLs, Resource URLs, Javascript problems
February 20, 2013, 09:16:06 am
I am running CiviCRM 4.1.3 on Wordpress 3.5.  I am on Dreamhost and have confirmed the server I am on is running required version of PHP etc.  I recently added secure hosting as we are planning to go online with payment processing.  I do not know when exactly the problem started...everything appeared to be stable until I needed to use collapsed accordion menus and java based date/time pickers.  I've researched forums etc. and am getting nowhere.  I THINK it has to do with a conflict between the Base URL setting, WP's URL settings, Resource URLs andDirectories. Here's what's going on in order of discovery:
  • java calendar in contribution form is not working
  • accordion menus in admin interface are not opening with a click (I can open with "expand all" where applicable
  • I checked Resource URLs and they had strings https://www.site.org/https:www.site.org/etc...
  • I corrected and was given notice paths in Directories were not working...checked them out, and saw essentially the same thing...my url was interspersed between several iterations of the file paths
  • If I manage to update Resource URLs, Directories get screwed up again, and if I correct directories, Resource URLS get screwed up again[\li]
    • java calendar picker in contributions and accordion menus still do not work (I guess that should be obvious but thought it was worth mentioning.

I have followed instructions online that lead me to re-run the steps that follow an upgrade of an existing installation that included resetting the base URLs.  I have followed instruction to reset the admin session and have tried all of the above all over again.  My best guess is that the Base URL setting is not correct.  There are examples of where that should be directed for Drupal and Joomla, but not Wordpress.  I do not know enough about Joomla or Drupal to extrapolate where MY base URL should be directed (I think that a WordPress example would be helpful in Adminster/Cleanup Caches and Update Paths)

I believe that I need the Base URLs set so that the js and other folders are found so the accordion menus in the admin interface and the date pickers in Contributions will work.  I am hoping that a correct address in Base URL will solve the problems that are leading to the weirdness with the Directories and Resource URLS.  I am an unpaid volunteer and people are getting upset with me because we are lacking some important information and functionality that I have been trying to add to our website.  I am getting pretty tired of the inordinate pressure on me to fix this, and am desperate to put this project away. Can someone please help me untie this knot?

Did you follow the steps here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC43/Moving+an+Existing+Installation+to+a+New+Server+or+Location

if there are specific sections where WP stuff is missing, let us know and we'll take a look at the docs and fix

The switch to https was immediately following an upgrade.  I can see where technically http to https would be like moving the installation, but was not looking at it that way at the time...so to perform the upgrade, I followed the 4.2 documentation here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC42/Upgrade+WordPress+Sites+to+4.2#UpgradeWordPressSitesto4.2-Step-by-stepUpgradeProcedures

I realized the http to https switch was going to require some changes, but I thought it would be limited to "force secure connections" option on the Administer/System Settings/Clean Caches and Update Paths page. Everything was working fine/I did not notice problems post upgrade and did not expect significant problems from the http swtich, so when they popped up, I came back to trouble shoot here:

 http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC42/Upgrade+WordPress+Sites+to+4.2#UpgradeWordPressSitesto4.2-UpgradeTrouble-shooting

The 4.3 documentation for moving an installation looks very much like the 4.2 documentation on the subject.  The first time Wordpress comes up is section 7.  If I knew more about Drupal and Joomla, I might be able to understand the direction I should be heading...but there are several steps that have no reference to Wordpress and it's hard to figure out whether or not I should be paying attention to what.

This is a production site having problems.  I was kinda hoping you had a magic bullet for me.  Do I need to go back and follow the "Moving an Existing Installation to a New Server or Location" instructions? or would something like this work:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC42/Override+Server+Directory+and+URL+Settings

I believe I have seen a similar suggestion to edit global settings when I first realized that I might have an problem with the http to https change.  I have looked at a ton of pages... Here and on the Wordpress codex... My brain is a little bent with the over-consumption of technical documentation. ???

Since your site is having issues right now, i would follow the steps from the "moving an existing..." document

if there are specific questions or things you need clarification, you should ask on the civicrm irc channel. u'll probably get a more realtime answer there
