Layered Membership
February 25, 2013, 11:13:05 am
Good Afternoon

I'm working on implementing CIVImember for my non-profit, and I'm trying to figure out how to properly setup the membership for our organization.

Its a Chapter style organization, where each chapter organization pays X per year per membership for unlimited members.  We haven't tracked members before this, so we are looking forward to having Civicrm implemented with member tracking capability.

So more or less, membership in the National occurs when your a member of the Local Chapter.

Is there a way to set it up so both levels have the ability to be member types?  Would it be possible to have a 'Chapter Membership' (Chapter Dues) is one type of Membership, then you have individuals who register for Chapter Membership, which then get inherited to members of the National?  It would amost appear then that  each Chapter would need a member type unique to its own, but that would probably end up being ok (we could then provide member registration services unique to the chapter)

I see that its possible for 'employee' level relationships, but it appears the 'relationship' for a member isn't a standard relationship?

Or is there a simpler way to have it setup so that the following relationship can be attained:

**********************
* National (Organisation) *
**********************
        |
**********************
* Chapter(s)(Organisation) *
**********************
        |
**********
* Members *
**********

Where members of chapters will be members of National?

Or would this have to be implemented where civimember just works with the lower level membership and the national membership is reported some other way?

Thanks
Dan

Hmm; I see looking into this a little more that this is what the price set function does, where it will more or less sign up the member for both the chapter and the national at the same time when they sign up; this should work.

The 'Organizational Memberships' would then be its own membership structure, at this point more or less unconnected.

I am not sure what advantage having Memberships of the Chapter and the NatOrg really achieves, but if it is a requirement then would the following work

John joins Branch A - and is given a relationship too of Branch Member with Branch A (needs a hook)
Mary joins Branch B - ditto

Branch A has a lifetime membership of National Org - set so anyone who has 'relationship = Branch member' inherits the membership that Branch A has to the NatOrg?

(hope I am not losing you - read up on 'inherited memberships')
