Events - Actual Participant Count

I have an event which is not using price sets and is showing a disparity between Find Participant Results and 'Actual Participant count'.
Any ideas as to whey this is happening?

Not sure of the specifics, but it might be useful for you to provide a bit more info on the disparity, so a few questions :)

What the participants look like - how many are there, what are their participant statuses, conrtibution statuses etc.?

Where exactly are you seeing the disparity?

On what page is 'Actual Participant count'?

Is this happening for more than one event? / can you repeat the problem? (that would help you diagnose)

What version of CiviCRM is it?

Yes sorry the question was a bit vague.
Civicrm 4.1.6
The participants are all  - registered participant no fee (public event)
This is happening for two events
Where - Find Participants or Manage Events, Participants
The 'Actual Participant count' is just below the figure for Results on the search page.
There are no - Cancelled, pending from incomplete transaction etc

It seems that the 'Results' and the 'Actual Participant' count are calculated in different ways.
I am not sure where to look now.

if it is happening for more than one event / all events, it sounds like it might be a bug in the code.  I would see if it has been
* reported in the issue tracker
* fixed in a more recent version of civicrm

depending on the answer to those to questions you could fill an issue / upgrade / apply the patch to your version.
