Is there a way to give VERY SPECIFIC permissions to a user in CiviCRM?

We are a profitable organisation and have a few employees in the Sales department. We want to give them access to our CiviCRM database ONLY to view recent activities that were created. We have only a few people that have access to the entire database and would like to keep it that way.

Is it possible to give our salesforce permissions to only view the activities they have been assigned, while restricting access to editing contacts and anything else.

If unclear about my question, please reply the point I should make more clear.

Have you explored using Drupal and CiviCRM's out of the box permissions to do this? Where does it fall down?
