Paid membership questions on payment processor and prorating

We made a payment processor for events. Can I assume we can use the same in Contribute for Memberships?

Also, can you handle prorating for leveled memberships in CiviCRM? In other words, if I have Basic Membership and Premium Membership, and someone is in the midst of their Basic Membership and they want to upgrade, the left over value of their Basic would go toward their Premium.

2. No, but u can potentially do that via some custom code and hooks
